The Jefferson County Open Space Foundation (JCOSF) applied for a Shift Events Grant to support and expand the Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) RAD initiative (Recreation Adventures for People Experiencing Disabilities). Thanks to the generous grant from Shift Events of $5,000 plus matching funds from JCOSF, we have provided $10,000 in equipment and support to RAD.
Equipment for Adaptive Devices
Funds were used for 5 categories of purchases:
- Assistance: Various straps, bands, and padding equipment to assist the safe transfer of riders to and from the bikes, as well as comfort for the riders
- Safety: Equipment for the safety of the rider like helmets, gloves, misters and first aid kits
- Maintenance: Spare bike tires, tire pumps and batteries, storage containers, and other equipment
- Trailer: Purchase of a 6’x12′ 2024 Pace American Journey trailer to transport two adaptive bikes and equipment to usable trails for the RAD program
- Program Support: Staffing and catering for trainers, participants, and volunteers at training event on May 11, 2024, facilitated by JCOS and Craig Hospital
Training & Partnerships
JCOSF provided assistance, safety, and maintenance equipment for several training events.
- JCOS partnered with Craig Hospital, the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, the Lockwood Foundation, and the National Sports Center for the Disabled to offer trainings on how to safely transfer riders from their wheelchairs to adaptive mountain bikes.
- Trained 10 volunteers and staff members who are now capable of hosting safe rides out in our parks.
- Trained 15 additional volunteers to educate visitors on the RAD program and adaptive bike awareness efforts.
- Hosted 4 educational pop-ups to introduce visitors to the equipment and program.
Mountain Bike Clinics
Equipment purchased with Shift Events grant funds will continue to support events like these Mountain Bike Clinics in the future.
- Facilitated over 20 rides to help visitors become acquainted with the new bikes and their special use.
- May 18, 2024: Hosted at Elk Meadow Park. We were able to get 20 riders out on the trail to test ride a variety of bikes.
- June 2024: Hosted a Roll & Stroll at Elk Meadow where we introduced 74 participants to the 2-mile usable trail loop
