Helpful webpage:
Jeffco Open Space has a new Adaptive Recreation webpage with detailed information about the Recreation Adventures for Visitors Experiencing Disabilities (RAD) reservation system. An adaptive bike share request form for this free service is accessed on the page. It also provides helpful definitions, maps, mileage, and surface information on each of the suggested usable trail routes within the Jeffco Open Space park system. Spread the word!
Upcoming event:
Adaptive Mountain Bike Transfer Training – April 26, 2025, at Jeffco Open Space Headquarters in Golden, CO
Similar to last year’s training, volunteers and staff will be trained on how to transfer a person to and from adaptive devices. The training will include safety, gear, and other considerations that can help make visitors comfortable on the trails. Craig Hospital and The Lockwood Foundation will be assisting, along with Topher Downham from City of Boulder and Jeffco Open Space staff.
Exciting work on the horizon:
Adaptive Climbing

Jeffco Open Space, National Sports Center for the Disabled, Boulder Climbing Community, and Craig Hospital recently scouted potential adaptive climbing routes in Clear Creek Canyon Park. Considerations for adaptive climbing routes include the pitch of a route, proximity to ADA restroom and trailhead amenities, trail conditions leading to the route, and the width of the area below and around a potential route. This group will be working with Colorado School of Mines students for a capstone project to develop adaptive devices and equipment that would help with some of these challenging variables to increase route opportunities.
Currently, Clear Creek Canyon park has one popular adaptive climbing route located near Tunnel 1, directly off the Clear Creek Trail, and pictured here.
